If any of you have seen the movie, What About Bob, you know Bill Murray's clever approach to mentally condition himself. As you might know, he awakes each morning trying to convince himself by repeating, "I feel good. I feel great. I feel wonderful!"
At Toastmaster's this week a sweet girl named Susan gave her first speech entitled, "MENTAL CONDITIONING." What a perfect lesson for me and my worse-case scenario thinking!
Listen to this hilarious story:
"My grandmother LOVED liver. She would serve it every day. What she didn't know however, was that my grandfather HATED liver. One day, grandpa decided he had to change the way he felt about liver.
He decided from that day forward he would painfully say, 'I like liver, I like liver, I like liver!' as he would ever so carefully place one piece in his mouth as if to swallow every remnant of its repugnant taste in one fail swoop.
Every day for months and months he would whisper this under clenched teeth, 'I like liver, I like liver, I like liver.' Not weeks later, he even began saying, "I LOVE LIVER" beaming from ear to ear as he devoured each livery morsel. A once loathed supper turned into a fine delicacy.
During this time, however, grandma started to notice everyone's faces as they would eat the liver. She started to say, "They hate liver, they hate liver they hate liver." Soon enough, she couldn't even look at the stuff anymore. But grandpa LOVED it!"
Susan decided she would try this tactic as she began her lessons in mathematics. She would write on the cover of each of her books, "I LOVE MATH, I LOVE MATH, I LOVE MATH!" After 6 LONG years of mental conditioning she is studying math while pursuing her education in Electrical Engineering!
What an awesome example of positive thinking! I am determined to try this trick!
